743452174126 Just the Facts: America's Documents of Freedom 1215-1774 ~ New DVD
American democracy has a linage of written records that we can trace to show the development of our nation, and how each document builds on those before it to make our foundation of freedom stronger. In this video we look at the documents conceived in the formative years of democratic thought and during the Colonial Era. Educators from noted American universities share their insights on:

The Magna Carta (1215) -- It may not be immediately obvious, but an English document from the 13th century does have a bearing on American democracy. It established foundations for the protection of individual rights and constitutional government in a society that had previously been totally subservient to a monarch.

The Mayflower Compact (1620) -- The Puritan Separatists who came over on the Mayflower penned this document, which is sometimes called the first Constitution. They were people previously subject to the English king and persecuted for their religious beliefs. Their Compact established a new colony at Plymouth and one of the first experiments in self-government.

Two Treatises of Government (1690) -- John Locke, the author the Two Treatises of Government, was looked up to by the founding fathers of America. He exerted enormous influence with his philosophy on how government should be structured. His words are found in our Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

The Sugar Act (1764), The Stamp Act (1765), and The Townshend Acts (1767) -- The Sugar Act, The Stamp Act and The Townshend Act were all attempts on the part of England to tax the colonies to recoup revenues from the costly French and Indian War. They resulted in the colonial protest, "taxation without representation." The colonists resisted. The Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party eventually resulted.

The Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress (1774) -- While stating loyalty to the crown, this step toward liberty asserted that the colonists had a right to the "free and exclusive power of legislation in their several provincial legislatures." It was one step closer to a free society.

743452176021 Just the Facts: America's Documents of Freedom 1798-1814 ~ New DVD
American democracy has a lineage of written records that we can trace to show the development of our nation, and how each document builds on those before it to make our foundation of freedom stronger. In this edition of Americas Documents of Freedom, we look at the documents conceived in the very early years of our republic. Educators from noted American universities share their insights on:

The Alien and Sedition Acts (1798) -- French privateers seizing American ships in the Caribbean led President John Adams and the Federalist Congress to pass the Alien and Sedition Acts, designed to deter those who would support activities against the U.S. government. Many saw these acts as contrary to first amendment rights, which led to The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (1799).

Louisiana Purchase (1803) -- This treaty between the United States and the French Republic was a diplomatic and political triumph for President Thomas Jefferson. It ended the threat of war with France and opened up for settlement the land west of the Mississippi a vast area comprising portions of what would become thirteen states. By any measure, the purchase of the Louisiana Territory was Jeffersons most important action while president.

Marbury v. Madison (1803) -- Called by many judicial scholars the most important U.S. Supreme Court decision, it established the principle of judicial review by giving the U.S. Supreme Court the power to examine decisions of other government bodies and to declare them unconstitutional if it found them to be so.

Madisons Declaration of War (1812) -- On June 12, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain as a result of long-simmering disputes. Issues included the impressment's of American soldiers by the British and disputes over the Northwest Territories and the border with Canada.

The Treaty of Ghent (1814) -- This treaty, signed in Belgium on December 24, ended the War of 1812. News of its signing did not reach American shores until after General Andrew Jackson led the decisive victory in the Battle of New Orleans, which that was thought to have brought the war to a close.

743452176120 Just the Facts: America's Documents of Freedom 1818-1830 ~ New DVD
American democracy has a lineage of written records that we can trace to show the development of our nation, and how each document builds on those before it to make our foundation of freedom stronger. This video examines the documents conceived during a most critical period of growth for America. Educators from noted American universities share their insights on:

The Convention of 1818 (1818) -- This event resolved several important issues that followed the War of 1812. It defined the northern boundary of the Louisiana Purchase; it set the U.S.-Canada border at the 19th parallel west to the Rockies; and, as an interim agreement, it established the northern boundary of the Oregon Country.

McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) -- Under the guidance of Chief Justice John Marshall, this landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision determined that the federal government had a right to legally establish a national bank and that a state (in this case Maryland) could not levy a state tax on a federal bank.

The Missouri Compromise (1820) -- When Maine and Missouri applied for statehood in 1819, the question of slave or free state arose. Henry Clay proposed the compromise that Maine be a free state and Missouri a slave state. The debate over slave states versus free states would continue and finally erupt into the Civil War 40 years later.

The Monroe Doctrine (1823) -- The United States announced to the world its intent to defend its own liberty and the freedom of other nations in this document, signed by President James Monroe. The document warned other nations not to try to extend their political systems to our shores. It is one of the most important documents of American History

743452176229 Just the Facts: America's Documents of Freedom 1832-1848 ~ New DVD
National Expansion (1832-1848) American democracy has a lineage of written records that we can trace to show the development of our nation, and how each document builds on those before it to make our foundation of freedom stronger. In this video, we look at the documents conceived in a period during which our national boundaries became more clearly defined. Educators from noted American universities share their insights on:

South Carolina's Ordinance of Nullification (1832) -- President Andrew Jackson issued this ordinance, along with his Proclamation Regarding Nullification and Proclamation of South Carolina (all in 1832), to nullify a law passed by the U.S. Congress imposing duties on foreign imports to South Carolina. Jackson felt justified in opposing laws he disagreed with.

The Constitution of the American Anti-Slavery Society (1833) -- This constitution was adopted at the founding convention of the American Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia. It borrows from the Declaration of Independence the concept that all men are created equal. It also charges that slavery is "...contrary to the principles of justice."

The Webster-Ashburton Treaty (1842) --This treaty with England settled the boundary question between Maine and Canada. It also defined the U.S.-Canadian border from Maine to the Minnesota territory.

Oregon Treaty (1846) -- This treaty extended the 49th parallel boundary from the Rockies to Puget Sound on Americas Pacific coast, confirming U.S. territory in the great Northwest.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) -- This treaty ended the Mexican War on terms dictated by the United States. It granted the U.S. a huge amount of territory, including much of Texas and many natural resources. Even today, the Mexican War remains an important part of the Mexican consciousness. As part of the treaty, Mexico was paid $15 million for the California Territory.
